Welcome to boating for beginners!

This website is designed to be a starting point for newcomers to the world of boating on the inland waterways.

Not too long ago, I was in the position of complete novice.  I'd been on a couple of boating holidays and, after hankering after a narrowboat of my own, I decided to take the plunge.  The question was, where to start?  I read the magazines, surfed the web, visited the odd brokerage, but still felt a bit lost.  Should I buy a new boat or second hand?  What type of boat should I buy?  How much would it all cost? Where could I moor it once I'd bought it?  This website is designed for all of you who are in a similar position - keen on getting afloat, but a bit unsure of the first steps to take.

Our rather splendid Sandpiper 56', "Arwen", moored up at Bollington Wharf, November, 2005.

Please bear with us as we build this site up - there's not a lot of information here at the moment, but we intend to add more information as and when we get the time.

Things we intend to cover include:

  • Choosing your boat: Which type is most appropriate?
  • How much is it going to cost?
  • Getting afloat: What do we need to do?
  • Finding a home mooring.
  • Cruising: Hints and tips for a trouble free voyage.
  • Training: You wouldn't drive a car without having lessons, would you?
  • Looking after your boat.

...and lots more as they come into my mind!

Not exactly cruising weather...

It was a little bit cold last winter!  Arwen (left) iced up at Bollington, February, 2006.  With the log burner stoked up, it can be very cosy on board...
